My TLDR: Amazon is worse than Google in a thousand ways, but they make up for it by being very good at one thing: they make it a top priority to make all their internal software communicate with each other ONLY as services. This allows them to have high quality services and APIs that can be exposed externally when the time is right, which ultimately gives them the ability to build something very valuable: platforms. For example, the Amazon webshop requires immensely complex infrastructure, and they accomplished this through the service called Elastic Compute Cloud that started out as an internal service and later became externally available (and very popular) because there was a market for it.
