#type/zk/zettel #a/maturity/small-tree # [[Maturity of notes]] As of [[2023-07-29|today]], I'm planning to track the maturity of the notes in my [[Knowledge Garden]]. I like the idea of [[Building notes up over time]], and want to [[How to tend to your knowledge garden|tend well to my garden]]. In a real garden, you keep track of the state of each plant, as they all need a different type of attention. So somewhat borrowing from [[Evergreen Notes]], I'm thinking of the following states for my notes: **Seed** Simply a reminder for an idea. When I'm doing something else, and have an idea, I write down the core that helps me to remember my idea later. This is the most simple type of [[Fleeting note]]. If at all possible, I should try to put it into Obsidian directly and add a couple keyword links at least or link it from another place, this way I will find it when working on related things. When I'm writing one note, and I get a spark for another, I can also directly create a seed with a link from the first note. **Sapling** A sapling is almost a tiny tree. It somewhat resembles a tree, but before it can grow, it needs to be placed in the right location of your garden. In a place where it has enough nutrients, space to grow, and sunlight. It's a note that has most of the relevant ideas there, but it hasn't been integrated into the zettelkasten. It doesn't really feel comfortable to just let it sitting there. At the very least, it has all the ideas that were in my head at the time of creating the seed. It's not just a reminder anymore. **Small tree** Once a sapling has been planted in it's final destination, it already can't really be called a sapling anymore. It's a small tree! Ready to receive [[Sunlight and nutrients (knowledge garden)|Sunlight and nutrients]]. Basically a sapling, but it’s been planted in the place where you want it to grow big. Keep watering it and eventually it’ll become a big tree. **Tree** Trees are strong, they're not easy to break. If a note reaches this state, it's ready to stand the test of time. If I read it a year later, I will still be able to follow my own logic. Furthermore, trees are well rooted in your garden, they are connected to their surroundings. You enjoy looking at the trees in your own garden. It has structure and coherence. It's a real valuable note, for myself. I can keep tumbling rocks, adding and refining ideas overtime, improving the line of argument, structure, etc. **Fruit** That's the thing you give to your friends. That's the part they get to enjoy of your garden. You might let some friends into your garden to have a look at the trees sometimes, but the fruit is what they can take home. These are notes that contain nutrients other people might enjoy. Doesn't mean I can't change it anymore over time or add ideas, but at least it's quite complete and decently written. --- Date:: [[2023-07-29|2023-07-29 21:52:39]] Sources:: Continuation:: Branches:: [[Judging the maturity of a note]] See also:: Further reading::
